The stain glass section Installed in 1929 for the 1931 grand opening were painstakingly removed for art preservation some 60 years later and stored by a collector. The patterns and design, rolled glass, kilned, suggest age and craftsmanship. A brief history of the Essex House. Construction began on October 30, 1929, one day after the historic 1929 crash of Wall street. The hotel was first intended to be named the Park Tower and then the Sevilla Tower. However the depression slowed construction and the hotel did not open until October 1, 1931, as the Essex House. In 1932, the hotel was taken from its bankrupt owners by the US Government’s RFC That same year, the hotel erected its iconic six-story sign on the roof. The hotel was renamed JW Marriott Essex House New York on September 8, 2012, after the sale closed. The hotel was formerly the home of a many-starred restaurant, Alain Ducasse at Essex House. Essex House has and remains a treasure on the Manhattan landscape, home to stars and those who love the glamour and wonder of this early 20th century classic. Own a piece of history.
